Descending from the eclectic underground of Minsk, Belarus, SOYUZ seek to re-imagine the 70’s Música popular Brasileira movement by connecting the dots between the jazz-orientated, non-English speaking pop music of the 20th century, and modern-day compositions. Led by composer and vocalist Alex Chumak, the name SOYUZ translates to ‘union’ reflecting the creative collaboration of the trio, including one of the key figures of the Belarusian underground scene Mikita Arlou and drummer Antom Nemahai.
Through their skilled use of lush instrumentation, expert songwriting and analogue production, SOYUZ aim to generate the non-verbal, universal emotion that Brazilian music incites, and which caused the love for this sound to spread across the globe. Citing artists such as Clube da Esquina and Burnier e Cartier as feeling like childhood friends, Chumack’s love for MPB has spread throughout his musical career. This led to his involvement in crafting the string and flute arrangements for contemporary Brazilian maestro Sessa; a true testament to Chumack’s talent and understanding of the genre.
