Favourite Finds: Curió Curió

For the next instalment, we’ve asked one of the most talked about new acts on the scene, Curió Curió, to give us an insight into a special record from their collection.

You know Curio Curio’s score by now. A meeting of minds between Rio-born, Austria-based singer and actress Luiza Monteiro and German producer Dustin Braun they have crafted the sound of the summer with their infectious Brazilian MPB-groove project shaped by psychedelic disco and studio experimentation.

"Hildegard Knef is a legend. Her theatrical persona, unmistakable low voice, and brilliantly playful lyrics have been a huge inspiration to us. During recording breaks, we spent enjoyable hours listening to her interviews and stories, trying to understand the unique character behind such a powerful and commanding artistic presence.

What also fascinates us a lot about this record are its dirty drum breaks. They appear out of nowhere, disrupting the flow in the most exciting way and giving the album much of its character. Combined with its adventurous arrangements and occasional spoken-word passages, it constantly defies expectations and makes it nearly impossible to predict where a song is heading next. While recording Curio Curio, we often put on the album and played along with our drummer Matthias Hetzer in the drum booth, inspired by its playful unpredictability.

Beneath all its musical surprises, Knef’s highly metaphorical and deeply emotional lyrics also offered Dustin comfort during difficult times. While this is certainly not a rare record among German groove diggers, we have a feeling it never quite travelled as widely beyond Germany as it deserves. We'd therefore love to share it with a broader audience and hope it can offer the same comfort, inspiration, and sense of discovery that it gave us."

Thanks to Luiza and Dustin for taking the time out to speak to us for this feature be sure to follow all their goings on via their instagram.
