Favourite Finds: Angelo Perna

Continuing our spotlight series called Favourite Finds, we ask some of our favourite DJs, collectors and selectors to tell us the story behind how they came across one of their most cherished records.

For the next instalment, we’ve asked DJ and radio host Angelo Perna to give us an insight into a special record from his collection.

Born and raised on the eastern outskirts of Naples, Angelo started buying records at a very young age. Growing up immersed in music thanks to his father, he developed a deep passion that turned into a wide and eclectic record collection and a love of DJing. Cementing himself as a key name in the Napoli scene, he’s now resident at Basic Club Napoli, collaborates regularly with Kagoshima Records and hosts the monthly show MusicaMente at Audioteca listening bar.

"I rediscovered this record thanks to a very close friend, having heard him play it during a special set at a pub. It’s a vinyl that belongs to my childhood: early in the morning, before going to school, my father would put records from his personal collection on the turntable. Among them was Concerto per un film: L’arma by Tullio De Piscopo.

It was a small ritual, a kind of comfort for me and my brothers. In my family, putting a record on and letting the sound system play was a real ceremony — even before coffee — as happens (or used to happen) in many Neapolitan homes.

The track that struck me the most is “Accattateve o’mbrello”: a powerful, highly intricate groove, full of tension and protest. The lyrics speak about resistance, workers’ rights and dignity. It’s one of those records that creates a special bond, connecting generations and roots through music."

Thanks to Angelo for taking the time out to tell us his story, be sure to give him a follow to keep up to date with all his goings on.
