Masterminded by the key and\u003cstrong\u003e highly influential calypso \/ soca steelpan player, Len \"Boogsie\" Sharpe\u003c\/strong\u003e, Phase2 showcases Boogsie’s innovative fusion of j\u003cstrong\u003eazz, funk and Caribbean rhythms\u003c\/strong\u003e in stunning style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDubbed ‘\u003cstrong\u003ethe Mozart of Pan\u003c\/strong\u003e’ by Wynton Marsalis, Boogsie began playing pan at the age of five and composed his own music by the age of nine years old. Across a\u003cstrong\u003e long and illustrious career\u003c\/strong\u003e, he has\u003cstrong\u003e won seven National Panorama Championships\u003c\/strong\u003e in Trinidad and Tobago with his compositions and band, a \u003cstrong\u003eworld Steelband Music Festival\u003c\/strong\u003e with his original compositions “In the Rainforest”, and \u003cstrong\u003etwo Notting Hill Panorama Championship\u003c\/strong\u003es with Mangrove Steel Orchestra. Over the years he has also played with \u003cstrong\u003eAndre Tanker, Lord Shorty, Lord Kitchener, Leston Paul, Clive Zanda\u003c\/strong\u003e, and other amazing Caribbean greats. Len became an arranger for the \u003cstrong\u003eNational Steelband of Trinidad and Tobago \u003c\/strong\u003eand is a cultural ambassador for the country promoting the instrument.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhase2 is built up predominantly of \u003cstrong\u003eoriginal compositions\u003c\/strong\u003e by Boogsie, alongside a track penned by \u003cstrong\u003efellow Trinidadian musician Raf Robertson \u003c\/strong\u003eand an outstanding Trinidadian-disco cover version of \u003cstrong\u003eRoy Ayers' classic ‘Can't You See Me’\u003c\/strong\u003e. Phase II is the name of the band Boogsie started with six of his friends who sought to compose their own music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrenched in \u003cstrong\u003efeel-good island-life energy\u003c\/strong\u003e, the eight tracks showcase Boogsie’s \u003cstrong\u003ecreative approach to the pan \u003c\/strong\u003eand its ability to elevate the flavour of a host of genres not usually associated with the instrument.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Can't You See Me’ is \u003cstrong\u003ean underground disco banger\u003c\/strong\u003e that has become highly sought-after. It’s no surprise why, with pan injecting \u003cstrong\u003eCaribbean heat to Ayers’ original\u003c\/strong\u003e. When rare groove DJs picked up on it and began playing it in their sets, it introduced Boogsie’s talents to a wider audience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFar from a one-track wonder, there is plenty more to dig into on the album. The \u003cstrong\u003ecosmic jazz-funk of ‘Boogie Kaiso’ \u003c\/strong\u003eis pure brilliance. Starting off with a soul-nourishing piano introduction, it drops into a \u003cstrong\u003esuper deep, addictive, pan-infused disco groove\u003c\/strong\u003e which has \u003cstrong\u003eCloud One-esque \u003c\/strong\u003evibes to it. The composition sounds fresh and is the perfect secret weapon for the dancefloor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eElsewhere, ‘Weight’ is another highlight. A \u003cstrong\u003esweet, catchy jazz-funk dancer\u003c\/strong\u003e with some sublime playing throughout. ‘Yoga Styling’ and ‘Punk Party’ kick off with brilliant breaks, before opening out into grooves rich in \u003cstrong\u003eleftfield disco swagger\u003c\/strong\u003e, hypnotic musicianship and blistering pan solos by Boogsie. Then there’s ‘Celebration’, reminiscent of a \u003cstrong\u003emix between a Stevie Wonder song and a calypso classic\u003c\/strong\u003e, with amazing, relaxed, but on-point funk drumming by \u003cstrong\u003eRichard Bailey\u003c\/strong\u003e.
